Birthday Flowers by Month: Every Birth Flower, Its Colour and What to Send in Dubai

Birthday Flowers by Month: Every Birth Flower, Its Colour and What to Send in Dubai

Every month has its own birth flower and its own colour. January is the carnation in deep red, June is the rose, and November is the chrysanthemum in gold. Build a birthday bouquet around either one and it stops being "some flowers" and becomes their flowers.

There is one catch most guides skip. Several traditional birth flowers, like violets, morning glories and water lilies, are not sold as cut flowers in Dubai at all. So for every month below we give you the birth flower, what it means, the month's colour, and what we actually recommend sending today.

Birth flower lists were never fixed by one authority, which is why some months have two flowers and why sources disagree. February is the classic example: you will see violet, primrose and iris all listed. The month colours above come from the birthstone list, which was standardised much earlier and is far more consistent.

January: carnation

Carnations stand for admiration and devotion, and they are one of the longest-lasting cut flowers you can give. Choose red for deep love, pink for gratitude, or white for pure good wishes. January's colour is garnet red, so a red and pink mix ties both traditions together.

Send: our Red Roses, Pink & White Carnations bouquet or the 100 Light Pink Carnations & Pink Roses for a bigger birthday.

February: violet

Violets mean faithfulness and modesty. They are grown as potted plants, not cut flowers, so you will not find a violet bouquet in Dubai. Go for the colour instead: amethyst purple.

Send: our fragrant 40 Purple Matthiola bouquet. It is soft, scented and the closest match to a violet's colour and charm.

March: daffodil

Daffodils are the first flowers of spring in Europe and mean new beginnings. In the UAE they appear only briefly and in small numbers. Bright yellow tulips carry the same cheerful message and last well in an air-conditioned home.

Send: a yellow tulip bouquet from our tulip collection, or ask on WhatsApp to add pale blue accents for March's aquamarine colour.

April: daisy

Daisies mean innocence, cheer and loyalty. They are simple, happy and easy to love, which makes them perfect for friends, sisters and anyone who prefers relaxed to formal.

Send: our 50 Long Stem Daisy Bouquet. For April's diamond-white colour, pair it with white roses.

May: lily of the valley

Lily of the valley means sweetness and the return of happiness. It is tiny, seasonal and rarely available in Dubai, and very expensive when it is. It is also toxic if eaten, so it is not ideal around children or pets.

Send: white roses, white blooms and plenty of greenery to echo May's emerald green. Our 50 White Roses in Brown Wrapping has the same fresh, natural feel.

June: rose

June babies are the easiest to shop for. The rose is their birth flower, so any rose bouquet is already personal. Red means love, pink means admiration, white means new beginnings, and peach means gratitude. June's pearl colour makes cream and blush roses an especially elegant choice.

Send: 50 roses for a beautiful surprise or 100 roses for a statement. Not sure how many? Read how many roses to give for a birthday.

July: larkspur

Larkspur (delphinium) means positivity and an open heart. Its tall blue and purple spikes are sometimes imported, so ask us on WhatsApp. July's colour is ruby red, so red roses are a natural match.

Send: red roses from our red rose collection, with delphinium added when available.

August: gladiolus

Gladioli stand for strength and integrity, and their tall stems make a bold statement. August's colour is peridot green, a fresh light green that pairs beautifully with warm summer colours.

Send: something bright and sunny. Our 20 Sunflowers & 25 Mini Daisies or a bouquet of orange roses suits August perfectly.

September: aster

Asters are star-shaped and stand for wisdom and faith. September's colour is sapphire blue. Purple, lilac and blue tones carry the month best.

Send: our 50 White & Blue Mix Roses for a sapphire-inspired bouquet, or ask us to build a lilac arrangement with asters and lisianthus.

October: marigold

Marigolds mean warmth, creativity and drive, and their gold and orange tones are familiar to many families in the UAE. October's colours are pink (opal and tourmaline), which gives you two directions: warm orange or soft pink.

Send: orange roses for marigold energy, or pink roses for October's birthstone colour.

November: chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemums mean joy, friendship and a long life. They are full, colourful and long-lasting. November's colour is gold, from topaz and citrine.

Send: a bouquet from our chrysanthemum collection, or sunflowers for the golden colour. Peonies, November's second flower, are the luxury option: see our peony bouquets.

December: narcissus

Narcissus (paperwhite) means hope and good wishes for the year ahead. It is a winter flower and appears in Dubai only in small seasonal batches. December's colours are turquoise and tanzanite blue.

Send: crisp white roses or white and blue roses with winter greenery for a clean, festive look.

How to build a birth month bouquet

  1. Start with the birth flower if it is available. Carnations, roses, daisies, chrysanthemums and sunflowers are easy to get in Dubai all year.
  2. Use the month colour when the flower isn't. A purple bouquet for February says "I thought about this" just as clearly as violets would.
  3. Support quiet flowers with fuller ones. Small blooms like asters or daisies look richer next to roses or lisianthus.
  4. Mention it on the card. One line like "Chrysanthemums, your November flower, for joy and a long life" makes the meaning land. See our 30 birthday card messages.

FAQs

What is my birth flower? January carnation, February violet, March daffodil, April daisy, May lily of the valley, June rose, July larkspur, August gladiolus, September aster, October marigold, November chrysanthemum, December narcissus.

Why do some months have two birth flowers? Different traditions developed their own lists, and no single body standardised them. Most months now have a main flower and a second one.

What is the birth month colour? It usually follows the month's birthstone: garnet red for January, amethyst purple for February, aquamarine blue for March, and so on.

Can I get my birth flower delivered in Dubai? Carnations, roses, daisies, chrysanthemums, sunflowers and peonies are widely available. Violets, morning glories and water lilies are not sold as cut flowers, so we use the month's colour instead.

What is the best birthday flower if I don't know their birth month? Roses are the safest choice. Pink suits almost anyone; red is best kept for a partner.
